Most common Indian birds everyone should know


In this blog, I will talk about some famous birds which are common in India. These birds can be seen in our native surroundings but in cities, they are very rare. Birds are a vital part of our environment as they help in pollination and are also great seed spreaders. Let us learn about some of our Indian birds found in most part of our country.



Laughing dove

Doves are long-tailed slim birds found in most parts of India. They are dull brown with a bluish-grey band along the sides of the neck and are made up of split feathers. They are in abundance and are very tamable. The sexes are indistinguishable. Their flight is quick and direct and they mostly feed on grass, vegetative matter and insects. They are mostly seen in pairs and smaller groups.

Rose-ringed parrot

The rose-ringed parrot also known as ring-necked parrot is very common in India. They are sexually dimorphic and so both sexes have red rings on their necks. They are non-migratory birds and mostly feed on fruits, berries and seeds. They can be taught to speak and so are good pets. In some parts of the world, these birds are considered as invasive species. They are mostly bred for the exotic pet trade and in some native parts, its population is depreciating.

Green bee-eater

These birds are insect eaters and are mainly found in grassland, thin shrubs and forests far from water. They are small, richly coloured birds with black beak and green wings. They cannot be distinguished based on sex. Their main food sources are wasps, ants and bees. They don’t migrate but can move seasonally in response to rain. They are in abundance and are fairly tamable.

House sparrow

It is a compact bird with a full chest and a large, rounded head The plumage of the house sparrow is mostly different shades of grey and brown. The sexes exhibit strong dimorphism the female is mostly buffish above and below, while the male has boldly coloured head markings, a reddish back, and grey underparts. These birds are mostly found in urban surroundings these days and are kept as a pet.

Black drongo

This small Asian passerine bird found in most parts of Iran, Sri Lanka, China, Indonesia. Feeds mainly on insects and also found in open agricultural areas. They are aggressive towards other larger birds which invade their territory. They feed mainly on insects such as grasshoppers, cicadas, termites, wasps, bees, ants, moths, beetles and dragonflies.
